Volume too low on downloaded non-AC3 video files

The volume on some video files I downloaded is much to low - I have to turn the volume knob on the speakers nearly all the way up for a medium volume level, and the volume is nearly inaudible when the knob is in the normal mid position. I do know that the files do not use the AC3 filter, as sound changes do not show up in the equalizer when playing the files - and the GSpot video file utility verified that, and that the files are of the correct size. Does anybody have a solution, or were the files just recorded at a low volume? I do know that the files use the standard MPEG 1 Layer 3 audio codec. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
