"Bad data in avi source” usually means what it says - there’s some corruption somewhere in the file.
Most players and previewers will only play up to the point of corruption and stop, but some may skip over the bad point if you pull the cursor far enough out to the right to skip over it. (That trick is not fool-proof however).
A more methodical way to salvage the good portion(s) of the video is using virtualdub (http://www.virtualdub.org).
Click on file, open video file, and before you choose your video file check the box “ask for extended options after this dialog”. then pick your video file. Check the boxes “re-derive keyframe flags” and “open in avifile compatibility mode”. If the file is particularly large VirtualDub may take time scanning through it.
When it’s done you can just play the file in VirtualDub (may be slow), or you can resave it. To resave, first click video and choose 'direct stream copy' (VERY IMPORTANT). then click on file save as avi and give it a new name.
