GDub Guest | Need some help please.
My mate downloaded a whole load of short videos off the net of car stuff, theres about 350 of them and they all play fine on his computer using RealOne player.
I have loaded them on to my computer off a CD and hardly any of them work. When i try to open them with Windows media player it says “downloading codec error” and only plays the music/background sounds.
If i try and open them in RealOne player it just plays them without the video.
Can anyone shed any light on why this is happening?
Any help very much appreciated,

Windows Media Player is lousy at giving error codes. They never tell you much about what you need to solve your problem. As for the error downloading codec, that’s simply because the Microsoft server only carries Microsoft’s own codecs (they used to carry more, like i263 or cinepak, but many got dumped).
In most cases using a utility like VideoInspector, gspot, or avicodec will tell you more about what you need (codec-wise) or if there’s problems with the file (truncated avi for example). If one of the utilities fail, use another.

ming Guest | hi, I do have the same problem to playback wav files using windows media player or realone player, both failed to download the codec.
But I noted that both were ok to play the same wav files around half a year ago when my old pc was not broken down.
Actually I did find mplayer2 in win98 has no problem so I don’t think it is the codec problem, but I do not want to re-install win98 again or in dual-boot.
Can someone advise a wav player like mplayer2 whick can play such file (perferably free).

I downloaded the codec that is needed for my file (H264/x264) but there’s still no sound and the error downloading codec message is still there.
In the same folder, there’s also a SUB file and a IDX file, to display subtitles.
Now that I can see the pictures and the subtitles but can anyone tell me why there’s still no sound? How can I solve this problem?

irishguy Guest | ok im tryin to download this file from torrentspy.com its called final fantasy 7: advent children and when i downloaded it i hit preview this file or what ever and it comes up to the windows movie player thing and says codec error. all i get is the audio and basically nothin else happens. please im sort of a noob when it comes to computers so i need alot of help.

Tam Guest | My daughter has the same problem ''download codec error'' and cannot play the movie which download from the web. I solved this problem after download the ''ffdshow -20041012.exe'' from http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow then install it. My daughter can watch the movies again from the Windows Media player without any problem. Please try and good luck to everybody.

Sara B Guest | I had the same error when I tried to play a video that was in AVI format (sound but no picture). I downloaded a program called video inspector (was a small file) then within the program I selected the file that I was having trouble with. It then told me that I needed XviD. I simply clicked on 'Download' within the video inspector program, it downloaded (again small file) and now I can watch my file in Windows Media Player. Hope that helps.

Marcus Aurelius Guest | GSpot and Avicodec are tools to find out what codecs you need. A codecs collection means any pack All in One or K-Lite or XP Codecs Xvid,Divx, and for audio AC3 filter is a must.Also download players like VLC or BSplayer or Media Classic: http://www.free-codecs.com/

ahmed Guest | i have d/l couple of movies ... b4 couldnt play em on WMP cos it used the divx encoding ..
after i d/l the divx codec player ...i could c most of the movies image and sound on WMP...but some of the movies i could c the pic , but with no sound ...and a message of ERROR DOWNLOADING CODEC appears at the bottom of the player .
some of these movies were specified by DVDrip.ws.DivX.AC3.6ch.SBMovie.....others by AC3 only ...
could u advice me ?
