WMV is a horrible format. Not to mention the quality sucks for WMV files. Best keep it as a QuickTime .mov file.

QuickTime is generally the best format for video and I have never encountered a situation where WMV is a better format.

The question was how to convert quicktime to mpeg/windows media and you responded with a 'why would you want to do that ...' What format is better than the other is irrelevant. You don’t know what their reasons are. Maybe it’s a usability issue and they want to deploy to mulitiple platforms.

Your reply is self serving and annoying.

I make videos for a living and love the flexibility of QT. Nobody, in my experience, in the industry ever uses WMV except when sending files to office monkeys to check stuff on their PCs. WMV is great for just that – cheap and cheerful desktop stuff. However, MPEGs are the daddy and ultimately we always export our QT files to MPEG for broadcast. We would never entertain the idea of using WMV for broadcast as the quality is just so low. WMVs are great for what they were designed for; low quality files which are fast to up/download from the net. Just chill out and use what you’re happy with.
The original question was about a free converter. I just searched on Google for “free quicktime to wmv converter for PDA” and got 84,400 results! That could be a good place to start looking. Good luck!
Queue the inevitable flames...

Your post just goes to show how technologically inept most are in the video world. Quicktime has always been crap. The player is horrible and until they jumped on the MPEG bandwagon after that sorenson junk it didn’t stand a chance of surviving. Btw windows media is just a proprietary version of MPEG, just like quicktime is. And windows media is primarily used for web quality or below(portable video). Although, I have windows media files from an HD source that are beautiful. The video industry uses quicktime because they are lemmings.

I’ve been working with digital video since 1994 and was one of the first in the US to have a firewire/3ccd minidv cam, so don’t try to tell me I have no idea what I’m talking about.

Quicktime and iTunes are two of the worst apps to come out of Apple.

Jeez ultima160 — keep your obnoxious opinions to yourself. If you can answer the op’s question, then do it. If not, shut the f(&*# up.

My comment to ultima goes to you too. No one asked your opinion of which is better, and no one asked for a history lesson from your perspective. Answer the question posted, or be quiet.

If you want to rant about what you like better and call people names, go somewhere else (like your local Starbucks).

I want to convert from QT to WMP for a different reason.
Somehow, movies that I have uploaded to my personal website as Quicktime take 30 seconds for other people to see. But the movies that were WMP encoded play immediately.
So, I was thinking that I should make sure the uploaded films were of a format that seems to be better suited to this server.
I don’t know why this happens and if someone else does, could they please tell me?

HI
I bought AVS Video Converter. I tried several free trial programs. Most were not very good, but at least I could try them first.
I am VERY happy with the AVS Video Converter. Simple interface and converts every type I wanted. Some of them do not do all formats.
Give them a try, you will like it.

Jesus... What to say! I don´t know anyone in the professional world who doesn´t use QuickTime as their main framework, long as it´s for desktop editing, web, DVD or cinema.
Most pros will use a number of systems and technologies, but none that I know of will ever use WMV unless it´s an emergency.

Anyone who is too lazy to download QuickTime and install it, doesn´t diserve to be in the internet.

Are there any completely free programs that I can use to convert my mov. files to wmv. files. I’ve already tried some “so-called free” ones that put a big advertisement in the middle of the video unless you spend 40$ for the full version.

Note: The only reason I want to convert the mov. file into wmv. is because mov. is not compatible with Windows Movie Maker.
