Simply shorten the file names on both the movie and subtitle files to just the movie name. Leave the file extensions the same. Put them in the same folder and then open the movie file using Mplayer. It should be that easy.

jim wu Guest | Thank for the tip of DirectVobSub
After installing that, I run the real player (not so cool, but runs) with srt and avi file in the same directory. I see the French title right there! Rocks.

VLC Can play subs Guest | I’m able to play subs in VLC. First you need to get a subtitle file for your specific movie you are watching eg, .srt . Goto http://subscene.com if the file didn’t come with your download.
Now that you have the sub file you need to open up vlc preferences goto video -> Subtitles and on the right you should see USE SUBTITLE FILE, open up browse and select the file u want.
Open up your movie and Wham bam you have your movie with subs .
Ohh yeah if you open another movie that doesn’t match the subs just open up your preferences and delete use subtitle file so it doesn’t show up.
Don’t get frustrated everything is available right here on the net. Remember GOOGLE is your friend..

On a mac using VLC go to preferences and deselect 'automatically detect subtitle files' and then choose the subtitle file to be played with the movie using the 'browse' button. It’s not automatic but it works!
Hi, rubytu! I am trying to do as you have advised, but I can’t seem to find this “deselect” option for automatic subtitle detection. I am using VLC v0.8.6f. Please help, thanks!

charles.pugh Guest | Get Total Video Converter.
It is relatively inexpensive and will easily include the srt files and other subtitle formats including sub .ssa .ass .smi .psb .tex .idx.
It is VERY fast, and will import/export more video formats than most people even know about.
It is very comprehensive.

JSEE Guest | Thanks but i needed another search to solve my problem.
The SRT file needed to be exactly the same name as the avi/rmvb file and in the same folder.
ie. abc.avi and abc.srt
abc.avi will not load with abc1.srt

andrewarei Guest | Using Mac OS X:
I downloaded an .AVI video and a .srt file for the same movie separately (“The Band’s Visit” in case you’re wondering). I put the avi and srt files in the same folder. I opened the avi in both quicktime and vlc and the subtitles didn’t show up, but the movie played fine with both.
Then I renamed the srt file so it had the EXACT same name as the avi file (thebandsvisit.avi and thebandsvisit.srt) and it worked like a charm in both applications. Subtitles magically appeared.
While playing it in quicktime I went to “save as” and saved the video as a “self-contained movie." Now the subtitles are permanently etched into the video, which btw didn’t have to re-encode — it
just added an .mov extension.

andrewarei Guest | ALSO:
I am using quicktime pro with the perian codec to view avi’s.
I use VisualHub to convert and burn the self-contained .mov with subtitles to DVD.

gunk Guest | YOUR DAMN MOVIE? YOUR? If you need to combine titles and movies, chances are you downloaded a pirated copy. I have never seen an original DVD that require you to do this.... So stop swearing and cough up! Besides, because you are on inferior intellectually, doesn’t give you the right to swear. So bugger off.
