Polluxito Guest | For those who use Mac OS ...Download Perian from:
http://perian.org/
Install it on your Mac and VOILA!!! you will be able to play AVI files and SRT files too!!!
It also helps when you have AVI files that see the image but can’t hear the audio...Perian solves that problem too.

Emma74 Guest | I’ve had problems with VLC not being able to autodetect subtiltes sometimes, and instead an error message pops up saying something about demux module missing..
But I just tried something that worked...
Open the .srt file (that should of course have the same name as the .avi file and be in the same directory).
Now remove the first line (it should just be the number “1." and click save.
Thats it, now it should load the subtitles without errors!

overfiend1976 Guest | I noticed an interesting feature with VLC. The subtitle file and the video file have to have the same name. I was just attempting to play back Warlords and it wasn’t working at first. The .avi file was named Warlords[2007]DvD and the .srt file was name Warlords[2007]subtitles.srt so I renamed them both to Warlords, each with its proper extension, then it played back with the subtitle option in VLC.

guest999 Guest | For Macs, just rename the AVI file to match the SRT file, have both of them in the same folder, and use VLC player. Worked just fine for me. Good luck.

Hi Guys.....Following the instructions on these two pages, I have successfully managed to properly display .srt files with my AVI movies, using both MPlayer and VLC on a Mac G4 500 Mhz Dual Processor. For those of you who are still having problems, following are some very explicit, step-by-step instructions. You can’t possibly go wrong...well, maybe!
How To Use .srt (subtitle) Files Under Mac OSX
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
Option #1 - Using MPlayer:
— — — — — — — — — — — — -
1. Launch MPlayer
2. Choose “Preferences” under the “MPlayer” menu.
3. When the “Preferences” window opens, go down to the
“Subtitles Settings” section and set the “Font” and “Size”
according to your taste. “TeX Sans” and “Normal” appear to
be the default settings.
4. Ensure that “Default Encoding” is set to “MacRoman”.
5. Click on the “OK” button located in the bottom right
corner of the “Preferences” window to save your settings.
6. Using the Finder, navigate to the folder which contains
the .avi file that you wish to view.
7. Select BOTH the .avi file, as well as the accompanying
.srt file, and drag them simultaneously to MPlayer’s
playlist window.
NOTE 1: The .avi file and the .srt file should have the same
exact name. Only the extension should be different.
NOTE 2: While you will drag both the .avi file and the .srt
file to MPlayer’s playlist window, ONLY the .avi file will
actually appear in the playlist.
8. Click on the “Play” button located right above the
playlist.
9. Enjoy your movie!
this was very helpful to me! The only problem is that when I added the subtitles, all the appeared was "???????" for everything. i tried another subtitle but it was the same result (I even checked it in y browser and all of the english was there). Any suggestions? (PLEASE e-mail me your reply! dreams_of_japan@yahoo.com, if you spam me I’ll bite your head off, though)
