how do I play avi and srt files together?

i dled directvobsub, the subtitles are there... but the movie is a quater of the size it should be, only in the top two corners (two screens basically) annnnd it’s upside down and backwards... help please?

thanks a ton mac osx little helper. i’d been struggling with this for about half an hour, but your step by step instructions helped me figure out the vlc player method in about one minute. thanks for saving me at least another half hour.

Hello,
I’m tyring to play a movie with an SRT file simultaneously. I use DivX and VLC Player. I put the srt file in a folder within the folder with the movie in it. VLC wasn’t able to auto-detect the subtitles. I had earlier tried to just have the two files (avi & srt) in a folder with the same name. No success. Any ideas, anyone? It’s greatly appreciated.

You need to use vlc player and have the titles in the SAME folder with the exact same name except for the .avi and .srt extention. Media Player Basic works too except you manually load in the .srt from the pull down options on the top menus.

To convert AVI to DVD and burn with a .srt file you should use
VSO ConvertXtoDVD-totally automatic and the burning program is the best I have ever seen. It will convert EVERYTHING including MP4, OGG, and even mkv files in one step and then burn it. I’ve heard DVD Santa works too but it wasnt as good quality video output as the first.

Sorry that would be media player classic. Another one that will let you load any .srt file to play with something is BSplayer (look it up on google, it is a freeware) On the player module it has a button for subtitle hit that and browse for the srt file. This way it doesnt matter where the file is or what its name is. So drag and drop the avi and then either drop the srt or hit the subtitle button. EZ.

Cyberlink is basically a program to autoplay store bought DVD’s and DVD encoded files. It is not going to be helpful (that I know of) for downloaded AVI especially with .srt

I am guessing you already have your codecs like k-lite codec pack (just google and follow the links) install this to see most types of files.

Get a universal player, I would recommend Crystal Player (its free, google it) because it is pretty user friendly. VLC player doesnt have any good help files so if you dont know alot about players you may get lost, if you do get it make sure to unassociate mp3’s and all music file types, it is a crappy music player (no drag and drop playlists that are ez to use)
SRT files should be loaded after the avi is cued up then go to your drop down menus and look for your subtitles, this should browse for it. I have heard that Crystal will autodetect but I load it in to be sure. BSplayer is another good one. Any DVD program that comes with the computer or on a DVD is usually not a good one to use.

Try downloading the K-lite codec pack. I have no problems watching movies with subtitles. The problem i’m having is that when I burn my movies, I cant get the subtitles on my dvd. I have nero express, any suggestions?

Yes VLC is excellent, especially on the Mac for having its own sense to play subtitles. HOWEVER
occasionally, you may get a srt file that crashes VLC. This is not the fault of VLC. After hours of trying many other things, this is how I cured the problem: go get another version of the srt file, and here’s two places:

Take that alternate version of the subtitles and rename it, exactly like the one that does not work, move the defective one out of the movie folder and replace with the new srt file. Hooray! this worked.

thanks for the tip Laurens....i had a .srt that wasn’t playing with my .avi because the names of the two files were not exactly the same...i changed them to match and bingo...it worked.

hei, thanks for this great post thread i finallyfound the simplest way to play these smi files in avi vids. however my question is, how bout if i burn these videos to dvd format? how can i merge the subs? thanks a lot
