Video files don't play

My computer seems to have lost the ablity to view video files.

My OS is Win98. When I try to view a video file the video file player (both winamp and windows media player) crash with a “This program has performed an illegal operation” error. This happens before the video even starts. Audio files play ok. And quicktime files can be played and any file that the quicktime player can play.

How can I fix this problem?
