Audio codec problem?

Hi, downloaded a movie via bittorent and its in .avi format but cant be played by anything (wmp,bsplayer,wmc,divx,etc)wihtout getting an error except vlc, and when i use vlc i can hear the sounds like soundeffects but cant hear any talking.Help is appreciated.
