moved files not moved, access denied

I’m having an odd problem here.. I have a lot of video files on one drive, and I’m trying to sort them out. I move them from that drive, to sorted folders on another drive. Windows (XP, SP2) moves them over, and they show up on the new drive, and are usable. However, seemingly randomly, windows will not delete them from the old drive. Some files work fine, and some don’t. When they don’t, they’re now on both drives, I can’t delete the files, rename, move, open, etc.. but only on the original drive. The new copy on the new drive works perfectly. If I reboot, or end task on explorer.exe, I can then delete those files or move them, etc.. but then it happens to other files when I move them.. This only happens with media files, .avi and .mpg both, I don’t see a common codec involved here so far.. I grabbed sysinternals process explorer utility, and I notice that all files that I’m having the problem with are still open by explorer.exe.. it’s not releasing the file handle after finishing the move, and it’s still locked.. but I can’t figure out how to fix this... any clues?

It’s a nasty XP bug. If you are running XP you can fix the problem, follow the instructions EXACTLY. If you f**k up your PC its not my fault!

What you need to do is remove a registry entry that makes explorer load shmedia.dll.

Credit is due to Duxus who came up with the solution and Moo who compiled the inf file.

Step 1 Create a text file with the following text inside, copied EXACTLY!!!

[version]
signature="$Windows NT$"

[DefaultInstall]
DelReg = Reduce.Reg

[Reduce.Reg]
HKLM, “SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32”

Step 2 Save the file with the extension ".inf”. So the file will read something like XP-AVIFIX.inf

Step 3 Right-click the file and select Install.

Done!

Actually, I saw this fix on another forum, and I already tried it.. it did not help at all. sad
On a side note, if I copy the file from one drive to the other, it works fine, I can then delete the file manually with no problems 100% of the time. It seems to only be moving files, and only about 50% of the time..

actually - an update -
In testing, I find that it doesn’t matter if I move or copy. What matters is that I work with more than one file at a time. For example:
I have 5 files that need to go to category A, 5 for category B, and 5 for Category C.
I start the transfers for all 3, and wait for them to finish. Now, all files involved in these are 'locked' on the original drive. I can’t delete them, move them, name them, copy them.. nothing. trying to delete them at a command prompt just gives an 'access denied' message.
After a reboot - they’re gone, I don’t even have to go back and delete them..
For some reason, windows is leaving those files in limbo - not releasing the file handles..

Still struggling with this.. can’t find any cause.. and now, it’s even more odd, in that sometimes I can move a file, and all looks good, but I look back a minute later, and the file(s) I just moved are back in the original folder! (as well in the folder I moved them to) Those files are now untouchable in their original locations. I can’t open them, rename them, delete them.. etc. (access denied). Nothing short of a reboot does anything to them. After reboot, they’re automatically gone.. help!

A shot in the dark, but you could try taking ownership of the files in question.

Hmm.. I just tried this, and I am already owner of all these files. I did it again just in case, and made myself owner of them, with full permissions, and I’m having the same problem.. note that this also happens with newly created files.. and now only about 25% of the time.. but still annoying.. And it’s definitely only happening to videos.. codec doesn’t seem to matter though.. Quicktime is the only format not affected that I can tell..

I am having the same problem - spent hours searching for a solution but it doesn’t seem to exist. I am ready to give up.

PS You are correct in one aspect — it’s when you move MORE than one file that the problem starts. Either MS knows but won’t admit it, or they don’t know and really stink.

Im having the same problem moving folders. If I move a folder to another drive the original folder is sometimes left with access denied to it. Quite annoying. Haven’t had the problem for the past year, seems to have just started.

I am yet to find any reliable fix for this.. still having problems.. only with video files.. .mpg, .avi

So far, the only thing I’ve found to help is to only move one file at a time.. though this gets very tedious..

Fun Fun...
New development.. now it happens with single files.. and not just when I move them.. Still only video files..
I have a video on my desktop, I drug it to the recycle bin, and it deletes.. about 2 seconds later, it appears on my desktop again. Now it’s indestructible.. I can’t delete it, move it, open it.. or even rename it. Windows just says the file is in use.. of course, it’s in the recycle bin too.. and that emptied without a problem.. this is just wierd

resstart your pc in safe mode ( with dos prompt) using F8 button.
go to destination
use “cd .." to go to root.
use “cd directory name/directory name”
to go to the exact path.
now use “del filename/F”
to delete file.

The problem is related to WinXP generating an icon or thumbnail image for a movie file - either mpg or avi. Explorer locks the file briefly to achieve this but under certain conditions fails to generate the icon/thumbnail and fails to release the lock - producing the observed results. i.e. Generally the file in question can be deleted or moved, but then upon a folder view refresh it reappears as explorer has expected it to be gone but the deletion is pending the release of the file lock.

See http://smallvoid.com/tweak/winnt/desktop.html under section 9. 'Configuring the media shell extensions for Explorer' for further detail and useful links.

Solutions: Either manually release the file locks with a tool such as procexp.exe, or for a permanent broad solution unregister the dll in question with “regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll”.

Doesn’t work. I’m experiencing this in both AVI and MP3 files. Now the weird things is, I can’t copy the said files to my HD from another source. That means, I can’t rename, move, delete, or save avi/mp3 files in my HD for some reason.
