can't play wmvs without media player installed

i removed windows media player from my windows install, and as a result can’t play .wmv files. i’ve tried installing the SLD, K-Lite and numerous other codec packs [not all at once], zoom player, media player classic, vlc player, and even the windows media encoder, and still it flatly refuses to play .wmvs. any idea how i can get around it [short of downloading media player 9+]?
