Screen format question

Is there a way to tell what the screen format is before you download? Most of the .avi files I have downloaded are only partial screen, like it was formatted for the movie theatre. Is there a way to change this so it will play full screen on my television (thru the dvd player)? I’m a newbie here, so use very little technical jargon please :-)
