I installed DivX and then installed the windows critical updates for WMP 6.4 and 10 and then all .avi’s were shown with strips of green and red - obviously this was not a fix for the problem. I had to restore my computer to a previous restore point (removing the updates) and then avi’s are fine.

Okay i’ve done all that was suggested and still no fix. I’m pretty sure it’s one of the windows update but don’t know which one... help a brother out.

n2szeRo, the security update for WMP 10 for Windows XP KB917734 is the one you need to uninstall. Make sure you choose to hide that update so you don’t reinstall it in the future. It causes a problem with bad colour - stips of red and green. If you can’t play avi’s at all then you probably have a codec problem.

this has happened twice to me, its definately a windows critical update. When i rollback drivers with restore, no issues again.

Like i said, this is a pattern that repeats and i hate it... i’m not sure which update it is, although i will say its less than 2 months old when it first appeared

The freeware VLC Player plays everything. Just right click your file - click open with VLC player. Done!

If you use VLC (a free media player that plays many formats and used by schools as well) then you can view your videos.
Unfortunately, this effects me especially as I need to put together a movie for my school project in two days, and I need Windows Movie Maker to recognise visual as well as audio.

If anyone has any suggestions, please reply!

Download this:

http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/download/index.php

It’s the DivX codec that allows Windows Media Player 10 and higher to play .avi files.

chuck V had it right! why aren’t ya’ll listening...“if a file is identified as the src attribute in an element and the .avi file is in the same directory or subdirectory, everything is OK. But when the .avi is in a sibling directory or the parent directory, and the path in the src attribute is changed accordingly, the WMP window only displays the controls, no video." Soooooo.... just move the file to a different folder. Problem solved EVERY time.
