huge problem with viewing movies

I have this major problem with viewing movies. I recently changed graphics card, the ATI 4850 and I immediately installed the latest ati drivers (8.8) . Ever since then, I can’t get any movie to play. Not even in VLC! I thought there was something wrong with my new drivers, so I played around but nothing happened. Then I thought it was a codex problem, so I decided to install the K-Lite pack (I had the divx bundle). During installation the K-Lite asked me if I wanted to uninstall the divx bundle and I said no, so it installed everything else. Nothing happened, I could view no movies with windows media player or vlc. I install the K-Lite pack again, this time telling it to uninstall the divx bundle. It worked! I could view any movie. I turn off my pc and now that I turned it on again, the movie files are not working again. The image is black, but I do have sound. I re-installed the K-Lite pack and nothing happened. Nothing works anymore. VLC, WMP and media player classic don’t work. The only thing that does work is nero showtime and itunes (the latter for a few file formats only). What is going on? What can I do to fix that?

Thanks for your help in advance. I’d also like to mention that I am a newbie at these things.

Sorry for the double post. I checked if I can watch DVD’s and I cannot do it with PowerDVD or VLC, but I can with media player classic. Help!

You should probably check your overlay settings. Look under the advanced properties for your display.
Also, if it’s divx movies only, you can go into the divx decoder configuration utility and tweak with the hardware overlay settings.
If both fail, try alternate ATI drivers (I heard the Omega ones sometimes work better)
