Converting avi's to if or vob Files

Hello, I am relatively new at this and i have several movies as AVI files but alas Nero 6 will not recognise these as a format to enable me to write it to a DVD, please advise on how i can convert them to the forementioned files.

You can use WinAVI video converter, but this is not free software:

Or you can try the free, but *maybe* buggy DivXToDVD software by vso software:

Also DVDSanta I heared is good, but again not free and annoying text placed in final video:
