Remote assistance could help, but I wouldn’t recommend using a forum to invite random strangers on the internet to help you! You could probably fix it yourself anyway.

Chances are you’re missing the drivers for the sound card. (Drivers = software that communicates between hardware devices and the operating system - in your case Windows XP). Here’s how to check: go to start, control panel, (classic view if you haven’t selected it), then 'sound and audio devices'. Look on the audio tab. If things are grayed out and you can’t select devices, that probably means you don’t have the sound card drivers installed. Alternate way to check: click start, run, then type “devmgmt.msc” without quotes and press enter. The device manager will appear. If you have any devices with yellow exclamation marks, they’re either missing drivers, or malfunctioning. Devices with missing drivers will usually be listed under “Other devices” (in some cases, sound cards with missing drivers will be listed as “multimedia audio controller”). See this pic.

First, what did you have before you installed Windows XP Pro?
I doubt you know the model of your sound card, but if you do, you can just google it and download the drivers from the manufacturer’s web site. An alternate way to check is to look in the user’s manual for your computer. There will be a section (usually in the back) listing the specifications for your laptop (it will list all the hardware devices). Just find the name of your sound card or chipset on there and google as mentioned above.
If you lost your user manual, you can look at your computer and look for any inscription that tells you the model number. You can most likely find the user’s guide and drivers to download simply by searching for the model number on google.

When you find the drivers, if they’re in .exe format, you can just run them and the install should run smoothly. Sometimes they’ll require manual installation (meaning you have to unzip, then point device manager to look for the driver files in a specific location). If you need help with that, get back to us.

If you have trouble finding out what sound card you use, get back to this thread too.
