.mpg to dvd - softwares will not recognize the files

Hi.
I had some .mod files and was told to manually change the extension to .mpg and then burn to dvd.
I typed in the .mpg extension and then tried two different softwares: ConvertXtodvd and Video DVD Maker. In both case, when I opened the folder to select the files, the softwares did not recognize the files. There were no files available in the folder to select.
So did I skip some vital step?
Also, in the original video, there were .moi and .mod files for each piece of video. Was I supposed to change *both* of those to MPG or just the .mod?
