Media Player playback problems

When I first installed Windows Media Player 9 it worked great but about 1 month ago I began to get problems with the playback of mpeg and avi files. Previously these files had worked fine. I had installed Real Player as well - could there be a conflict between these two? Some of the mpeg files look as though they are going to work and bring up the first clip but the movie does not ultimately play, however, the sound can be heard. Avi files bring up the details on the file, such as the file length etc. but playback never starts, no image is shown but the play bar can be moved along.

Can anyone suggest what the problem may be or point me in the direction of a solution.
