Too many codec packs causing trouble?

I have some DVD files that are now backed up on my hard drive. The video and audio work just fine with Nero ShowTime, but I lose the audio when trying to play the same files in Windows Media Player. Is this expected? I downloaded the NVIDIA DVD plug-in for Windows Media Player, but still no audio.

Also, over the years I have downloaded tons of codec packs and they have all helped for various projects. What is the best way to ensure that the codecs are not interfering with each other? What is the best way to clean my system up?

Well, I solved the problem by installing WinDVD. It fixed all the audio and video codec problems. The only problem now is that nothing will play in Windows Media Player - no video or audio, so I guess I’ll be using WinDVD for everything now.
