playing avi files on a mac

i have a mac computer and use quicktime to play movie/tv files. untill recently, any file i downloaded would play. but now only my mp3 and mp4 files will play. the majority [avi] wont. please assist in whatever way possible. thanx. =]

Remember AVI is merely a container (like a wrapper) inside which you can have video and audio streams compressed in various codecs (COmpressor/DECompressors). To decode a stream compressed in a specific codec, you need that codec.

First thing to try: Perian (it’s kind of like a “codec pack” for QuickTime Player).
If that doesn’t work, try MPlayer OS X.
If that still doesn’t work, try VLC Media Player.
If all else fails, get back to us.
