The simplest solution to the codec issue would be to dl and install FFdsow. It uses the open source library, and handles both video and audio decoding.
Also, again, you HAVE to know which codec is being used in the file you want to watch. G-Spot, VideoInspector are both fine apps. They will tell what codec is needed to view the file. Then see if you have it, if not dl it, or turn it on in Ffdshow.
The latest version of FFdshow has alot of codecs that it enables, as well asmost of the common and not so common audio codecs as well. Plus it allows ENCODING as well.
Just, very importantly, make sure that the filters priority is set to 6000 or 7000 to make sure it gets called by windows, and not another codec that may not do the job.

In G-Spot you will often see several filters/codecs being used to rnder the file. when you hit '2' (to render) you’ll note some of the attempts will fail, others will work,(hopefully!).
The filters that work need to be the ones called. This is accomplished by setting their priority higher. The problem with the codec packs is that they load all kinds of crap into your system, and don’t really make certain that there are no conflicts between all the codecs they install.
FFdshow uses the open source library, at this point it even decodes Mpeg2 files. Can’t ask for anything neater or simpler than that, and it’s really just one codec that you need to have the settings correct for. Most of the individual codecs out there are based on the same code, so why complicate things? (not the proprietary ones of course)

luck,

Thanks to AcidAngel for the easy to understand answer to the problem - download the VLC player. Simply go to http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?qt=VLC+Player&tg=dl-20&search.x=17&search.y=10. I tried to open an hdtv avi file in windows media player and only got sound. I tried realplayer and quicktime, none of which worked. Something with DRM I suspect.

I have a set of Loki’s files (*.dsr-loki.avi) which all play for about the first 5 seconds then stop. I’ve tried various players, most of the ones mentioned in this thread. Some players (example: Windows Media Player) say they can’t play the file. Others (BS player, VLC) show about 5 seconds of the file and then stop. I’ve installed VideoInspector and downloaded the codec it says I need, but still no luck. Any ideas?

HDTV means High Definition TV and has better resolution, i.e. 720 lines at least and the compression is high for this kind of files, so you really need a good codec.
