droyus Guest | Here’s the scenario: I’ve downloaded a number of AVI files from Limewire that I cannot view. They’re all copies of the HBO series Carnivale, and all are of the 2nd season’s first episode. For some reason, people started uploading in a bizarre format I’ve never seen before...the filenames all contained jibberish like hdtv-lol.xvid.loki.pyro.blahblahblah.
When I tried to view them in windows media player 9 (I’m using win2k so I can’t use WMP 10), all I saw was an extremely garbled view of my desktop in the media player window! The player also listed the
length of each file as 0 minutes and 0 seconds. The file sizes are anywhere from 222MB to 350MB.
I did a little research, updated my Divx drivers, installed the xvid codec, succesfully played the xvid test movie, and tried again. Same result...a garbled partial screen capture of my desktop popped up in my WMP screen. The Divx player would not play the file either...it popped up a message saying that this is a different format and I would probably need to download a different codec to view it (which I have already done).
I tried installing ffdshow. The view in my WMP window changed from my desktop to blank. The player still listed a file length of 0 minutes and 0 seconds and would not play. FFDshow got uninstalled. After uninstallation the player went back to showing me my butchered desktop view.
My last effort was to install the GSpot codec finder. I loaded all of the AVI files into it and GSpot told me the same thing each time: The files are valid and playable, and I have all of the codecs needed to play the AVIs properly. And yet, I can’t get them to play. Has anybody out there heard of something like this happening to somebody else?? Does anybody have troubleshooting tips I should try
out? Help!

christine mogle Guest | You have just summarized my problems word for word regarding an inability to download the carnivale files from second season. Except I had not gone as far yet as to re-install the codecs or player. I also have gspot and it rendered everything fine. I’ve started to lose hope and have stopped trying to play the file. You have definetly saved me some anguish since I was probably ready to proceed into dangerous waters. I have seen inquires into avi files on windows media player community forum regarding this issue (minus the carnivale file) with no solutions. I am still awaiting help. If I succeed I will definetly contact you (and I hope the feeling is mutual). Good luck!! For a minute (actually about four straight days of downloading hell), I thought I was so computer illiterate that I should just return my equipment to save face. Happy searching!

Rina Guest | I’m also experiencing the same problems. I’ve been patiently waiting to download 'Lost' episodes because I’m out in Korea, and they don’t play that show here. I know that mpg files are reliable, because I’ve downloaded numerous mpg files. I’ve found 2 'Joey' episodes that are in mpg format, the rest are hdtv-lol. I have recently noticed that a lot of hdtv-lol files have surfaced. I’ve also tried downloading recommended codec files, without any success. So I have uninstalled those codec files since they don’t work anyhow. I’ve come to the conclusion that those hdtv-lol files are just fakes, to discourage people from continuing to download and share files. Does anyone know if the “lol” stands for laugh out loud??

Shadow5731 Guest | I’ve seen some of them myself as well...popping up here and there, many are in a format that I have yet to figure out EXACTLY what it is though, but others I’ve managed to repair sucessfully though, using the k-lite codec pack (sorry, can’t remember what the web addy for that is)....do a search for it, and possibly getting a different player called “VLC Media Player” can help or begin leading you in a better direction.
For this, all I know so far is that there IS a codec you can get, but that it’s also still not entirely correct for HDTV files keeps me from trying them out so far...I’m too busy trying to get all of “Stargate SG-1” files onto dvd relliably:P

Rina Guest | I’ve solved my problem with viewing hdtv-lol files. I tried to view a CD, and it would not play unless I downloaded a specific codec for it. Since then, I can now download hdtv-lol files, and view them, with no problems! It’s called DivX and I found it on Download.com. Good luck to you, I hope this helps!! I’ve now viewed 14 episodes of “Lost”!!

bluetrader Guest | I installed the Ace Mega Codecs pack and the viewer that comes with it called Media Player Classic.
It has the C00D1199 codec or equivalent which allows me to circumvent the WMP can’t open file.

This is for version 5.93 that works for me.

Marco Guest | Hey guys,
I had WEIRD problems too, had video, but no sound. Tried every friggin' codec out there, nothing worked. Until I saw this site. Searched Google for “ACE Mega Codec Pack” and this came up:
ACE Mega Codec Pack 6.3 Pro
it’s a 50MB download, I set it to Professional install so it installed everything! And now everything works, I can view all my movies, etc.
Hope this helps others with similar issues.

Saf Guest | Very simply - to find out what codec you need to play these files on WMP, real player and many others go to http://www.headbands.com/gspot/download.html.
Run this program and it will tell you what codecs you need for any video file in question

COMPUTERMASTER Guest | IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH WIN MEDIA PLAYER.
MY OPINION IS THAT IT IS TO CURB THE CURRENT FILESHARING TREND, THEREFORE WILL NOT BE PATCHED.
MEDIA PLAYER CLASSIC IS EXCELLENT FOR MOST FILES.
IT CAN BE FOUND IN THE K-LITE CODEC PACK.
SEARCH FOR IT ON EMULE, TORRENT, OR KAZAA, ETC.

KrAyZi3 Guest | hdtv.lol, hdtv.tcm. hdtv.loki etc.. i guess are groups who release high quality (maybe not 'high', but good enough for me not to complain..) rips of television shows. the files are viewable in DIVX player, but some older computers may need other codecs installed, as stated above. try going to
START > RUN .. and typing “mplayer2” [ENTER]. this opens Windows Media PLayer Classic, which has much less interface problems than WMP 8.xx+. if the codecs are installed properly but dont work on DIXV PLAYER, this is your last resort, far as i know. i aint no tech buff, so i guess ill leave it to the pros. hope that helps..?!!?

Antishak Guest | I had the same problem....I couldn’t open any of the tv shows I’d downloaded. I kept getting an error message when I used BS PLayer, saying “can’t creat DirectDraw surface”.
After taking some of the advice in this forum though, I finally managed to get it working again. I downloaded the ACE Mega Codecs package, as well as the VLC Media PLayer, and now I have no problems viewing TV shows.

alebubu Guest | I have a found windows media player to be an ass, most AVI files only play sound on it. In my opinion anyone who downloads AVI files should get Divx and Dr.Divx. Divx plays almost any vid file most importantly AVI + it comes with Divx Vod which allows u to copy your movie to a dvd and play it in a dvd player

AcidAngel Guest | I got Lost episodes from a friend that was in avi format, and mp didn’t show it. Try the VLC player - it’s brilliant - plays anything I give it to play. Find it here:
