I have Quicktime 6.5.2 installed. It was working fine until I installed iTunes. Now whenever I try to watch a .mov file I get the message “You may experience problems playing a video track because an unknown error occurred. The number of the error is: -8992. Would you like to close the movie or continue?" When I choose continue and hit play, I can hear the file but all I get is a white screen. Whenever I try to watch Quicktime streaming like movie trailers, I now can only see a white screen but I can hear the sound. I’ve tried uninstalling iTunes and tried uninstalling and reinstalling Quicktime but I keep getting the same error. Does anyone have an idea what this error is and how I can fix it? I’ve tried searching apple.com and the net for this error code but can’t find anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

2. Open the file in QuickTime, go to movie, get movie properties. On the left drop-down menu select video track, and on the right drop-down menu select format. What does the data format line say?

Regular Rep: 2Joined: 20 Nov 2004 Posts: 1,190 | OK I researched this a bit, and I don’t think it’s a codec problem (Sorenson 3 comes with QuickTime 6.5.2 anyways + plus if it was missing a codec it’d try to connect to the Apple server to download it, and report if it can’t find it).

According to them it appears to be a DirectDraw problem. Before doing anything make sure you have the latest (or latest working) drivers for your video card. If that doesn’t correct the problem, the suggestion there is to disable hardware acceleration. I’d suggest doing it only temporarily, since this takes quite a hit on performance.
Another choice would be to install QuickTime Alternative (which many think performs better in terms of displaying the video).
Note - the Apple site (http://developer.apple.com/documentation/QuickTime/APIREF/ErrorCodes.htm) calls this the codecOffscreenFailedPleaseRetryErr error, but I didn’t find it particularly helpful.

When I first started this thread, I tried QuickTime Alternative and that didn’t work also.
Now I just tried disabling DirectDraw which automatically disables DirectDraw Acceleration in the Quicktime Video Settings, still doesn’t work.
Next I enabled them back and went to my Windows Display Properties to try the Hardware acceleration levels. Instead of completely turning it off, I moved the level to “Disable all DirectDraw and Direct3D accelerations..". This solved the problem. Although this helps, I don’t see it as a long term solution. I don’t want to constantly change the levels whenever I want to watch a Quicktime movie. Right now the only solution I see and something I don’t really want to do right now is format the drive and start from scratch.

tc Guest | I just tried something else and it works. Much easier and something I can live with.
I left Hardware acceleration as the default level, which is “Full” and recommended.
Next I went to Quicktime Video Settings and selected “Safe Mode (GDI Only)". This will automatically disable DirectDraw and DirectDraw Acceleration for you. This solution works for me.
Patrick try this and see if it works for you.

AnotherComputerSemiDeity Guest | I had the same identical problem and tried the plethora of various previous suggestions. Changing the video settings to Safe Mode worked for me, also.
Out of curiosity, I tested other combinations to see if using any mix of the DirectDraw video options would also work. My results are that you only have to uncheck (disable) the “enable DirectDraw Acceleration” in order for Quicktime to play the video correctly.
Hope this helps save others some time, effort and aggravations.

elwrongo Guest | Amazing fix, I saw this problem for the first time today and was completely floored. Especially as the QT clip worked fine on other PC’s. Did the safe mode suggestion and it works fine now. This is great. But how are ordinary peoiple supposed to get by?

Mitch Guest | I have the same problem with QT, but when I changed the preferences it just did not help. And how do I get to Windows Display Properties? May it also is a problem that I use Firefox, and not Internet Explorer, becuase in IE it just works.

don’t download the QT prog but the codec on the QT website and install it ,zoomplayer will play the files and at least you can adjust and do whatever you want with the video settings etc

I found I could only cure (?) the problem by disabling DirectDraw acceleration. The QT safe mode change did not fix it for me. Another machine apparently identical works fine without the disable. The file is a .mp4

Ash Guest | I’ve tried all of the above mentioned suggestions to no avail. Further, when I go to add/remove (quicktime) it flashes so fast I can’t make out what it says but nothing happens as if it won’t even let me uninstall the program. I’m trying to view a CSi Reason tutorial which worked fine prior to the install of iTunes... any further suggestions... thanks

Candice Guest | I’m having the same problem. I can’t upgrade Quicktime to Quicktime Pro b/c I can’t uninstall Quicktime 7.0. Everytime I use the installer or Add/Remove the uninstaller flashes and and then goes back to the screen again. Did you figure out how to remove it? If anyone knows what to do please help! Thanks!

Had the same problem - did the fail safe thingie on reply #7 and works like a charm!
