(How) can I adjust the sound of an AVI file?

Hello everyone,
I’m new here and was wondering if you can help me out with this: When I play my AVI files on my TV with my Divx/xivd player I have to set the volume pretty loud. Is this normal or can I adjust the sound somehow before burning it to a disc and play it on my TV?
