this guy “awesome” is absolutely right, all you have to do is download the codec v.1.1.0, install it and it works fine!!
no need to download packs and ton of codecs. just that one will be enough.

JaydeBabessOx Guest | I have the same thing. I try & download things from my phone but when I do it says “The file \DCIM\100MSDCF\MOV00075.3GP cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again."
Where on earth do you get these damn codecs?! :@
| 26 Jul 2008 06:43 am |
Hauzer Guest | It’s not true, I can’t import the .AVI files.
“Tools -> Options -> Tick all”.
They’re all ready fully ticked. I think I just don’t have the codec.

BillyGoines Guest | I went to:
- TOOLS
- OPTIONS
- COMPATIBILITY
And clicked everyone of the boxes inside that list and the only one that WASN’T CHECKED was ffdshow Video Decoder, I checked it and then restarted Windows Movie Maker and then it let me import the .AVI File I was wanting.

Ctous Guest | Great info, Gregg..after downloading a general XP codec pack that had all the codecs I could ever need in one download, I went into tools/options and did what you said..
“just managed to fix it on mine smiley. make sure the movie will play (or if not go download ffshow this should sort out most things) then go in to movie maker. click tools/options. go to the last tab and make sure that all of the codecs have a tick by them. now try importing the file again hope this works smiley”
AND IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM. Thank you!

HELLO!!!!!!!!
I HAVE FOUND A WAY BUT IT SEEMS EVERYBODY IS TO LAZY TO READ “ALL” THE POSTS....BECAUSE IF THEY DID, THEY WOULD HAVE TRIED MY WAY...Sorry getting off, but I just dont understand why people I saying that they havent found a solution, somebody please posts if this did not work for them....
AS I SAI
“I have found a way. Go to your windows start menu then to programs, accesories, system tools, and then click on “system restore”. After this just choose the date before this error had occured.
Note: If you had installed any new programs after this error you will loose them but not the information you saved on them. Example: I had lost my iTunes program but when I reinstalled I still had all my songs on the program. So dont worry about loosing any vital information."
Instead of killing youself trying to find codec, do this.....It worked very well for me....
NOw I hope I dont see anymore “But still no answer”....I have one!!! Use it!!!
its not the program thats the problem its the type of file.

M. Gage Guest | Hey everybody, I had the exact same problem, then I found the following solution posted by Sajjad, from Iran. It worked for me! Thanks Sajjad!
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — -
I had this problem with movie maker and said to me this error:
The file E:\alefba\ AVSEQ01.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.
But I have solved it, you want to know how? ok. read below:
1-open movie maker
2-go to the tools — >optins menu.
3-go to the compatibility at the above of window.
4- at the filter box, check the “ffdshow mpeg-4 video decoder” (note, it didn’t read exactly like this in my program but I checked the the un-checked option at the bottom).
5- push “ok” bottom.
6-import your .avi video and enjoy it.
If you want to thanks me contact with sajjadnasiri@gmail.com and now say that iranian people are bad. HA HA HA

hm Guest | Bob, your idea is too risky...
| 15 Aug 2008 07:45 am |
hm Guest | 1. Click Start, click Programs or All Programs, and then click Windows Movie Maker.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
3. Click the General tab.
4. Make sure that the check box for Download codecs automatically is checked
Hey, I found this on the Microsoft Website

I tried your way, && my computer account totally screwed up.
I had to use my brothers account to restore all the original settings.
So, no, we weren’t ignoring you, just not telling you how much your “advice” took us 1 step forward, then 2 steps back.
