Zeitgeist Guest | I’ve just been having problems with Windows Movie Maker - that it couldn’t import my video because the codecs weren’t installed. So after lurking on here, I noticed posts referring to Gspot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/).
This worked perfectly. After downloading/installing the program, you choose the file which isn’t importing properly in WMM and it will tell you exactly what codec you need to download for it to work - no need to download the huge .zip files containing loads of different ones suggested by some on here.
http://www.wmplugins.com/default.aspx is a good, safe site to download these codecs from. Thanks for the help, and I hope this will help others.

mdjewflhrej Guest | i got this off of microsoft.com
“1.
On the Tools menu, click Options.
2.
On the General tab, check the Download Codecs Automatically check box.
You must be connected to the Internet in order to obtain new codecs. To change this setting back and prevent Movie Maker from downloading codecs automatically:
1.
On the Tools menu, click Options.
2.
On the General tab, clear the Download Codecs Automatically check box."
i don’t have that checkbox so it didn’t help me but maybe it’ll help someone

Rit Guest | it sounds like you need some sort of thing called a “codec” thats supports files that could read a certain type.
btw bob, ur system restore wouldnt hv nothing to do with it and it doesnt work especially with ppl who didnt hv a program that came with a codec that the movie maker was able to use.

Kimberly_Jackson32 Guest | I was getting the same message, so I downloaded the codec, now I’m getting the error message “C:\Users\Kimberly\Pictures\House-animal\Speedy movies\great dancing on couch and window, June-08.MOV could not be imported. Unspecified error”. I don’t know what to do now. There only 2 things I can think that could be causing the problem. 1) it’s set as a quick time movie, not as a windows media file (don’t know if that matters) or 2) I have Windows Vista, which seems to screw everything else up. Help?

Kimberly_Jackson32 Guest | FYI, I just posted the message above, and I DID download the GSpot file, and it didn’t tell me I needed any codec, but in the 'Container' box it said 'File Type: Quick Time w/ image preview(.MOV)' and then 'Mime Type video/quicktime'. Don’t know if this helps or not, just additional information. Maybe someone will recognize what it’s trying to tell me.
