I have had this problem too. You have to reinstall the latest version of Windows Media Player. This will also recreate the needed codecs to use movie maker and to watch movies requiring your missing codecs.

The file C:\.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

Now I dont know alot about it so I need help please.

Please check Microsoft site for codecs and it will ultimately point towards wmplugins.com.

Koepi’s xvid codec worked for me.

Jup got the same problem, but usually it is cuz these video’s you try to import are, either Quicktime format(mp4) or Realtime format and the windows program doesn’t support that.

Now i’ve got a codec package for my media player so now I can play all sorts of formats but it doesn’t update my movie maker, and aswell as some ppl I’ve been searching for a wile now.

@ that guy who thought he had it
sorry man but that’s just for normal errors this is format shit, you can allways format your video’s to wmv or such but those programs cost money(unless you rip).

I basically tried mostly everything in this forum. It works now to the point where i can finally upload my file onto Movie maker, but then a message pops up saying that Windows Movie Maker has encountered a problem and needs to close. That always happends after i put my video file into the slideshow on the bottom. I don’t know how to fix this problem. If anyone could help i would greatly appreciate it.

I had a similar problem. I went to Options then to the Compatibility tab. The correct codec was unchecked, when I checked it, the problem was fixed.

ummm i have the same probelem...what should I do if the movie wont play on my windows media player?
People have solutions for this, but they dont make any sense to me. When I try to play it on Media Player, it just plays the sound, but theres no picture...and when i try to play it on Movie Maker it says the whole 'correct codec is not downloaded' thingy.
So, since its not showing a picture, shoul I download like a movie codec or something....i dont know

GTABMX is correct. Install FFDShow, then update Windows Media Player. Once that is done, go back to Windows Movie Maker and try importing the file again. If it still comes up with the error, do this:

Tools — — ->Options — — ->Compatibility

Once under the Compatiblity Tab, scroll down the list of codecs and on the second to last codec, it will say 'ffdshow MPEG-4 Video Decoder'. Check the box next to it and hit 'OK', then exit Windows Movie Maker. Reload it and import the file. It should now work.

I found a way ^^ You have to download G-spot and then once you downloaded it, open it up and click 'File' then 'Open' and open a file which your Moviemaker wont play, then it says 'Codec' telling you which one you need to play that file...go on google and search for that codec, download it and it should work ^^

When I use the ffdshow decoder (included in the klite codec pack) with certain files in windows movie maker, windows movie maker just closes with no error message or anything. Does anyone know why this is happening or any possible solutions?
