jackie_elisabeth Guest | please stop restoring your computer!!! that’s not the way!!!
that only helps when errors occur after you installed new software or when you’ve been playing with your computer (as in: changing settings and stuff geeks do ;-)), not just when you have downloaded a file or when you’re trying to import stuf in windows movie maker!!!
anyway, if you’re trying to import an avi file you need the right codecs (avi files can be all sorts of files, coded in all sorts of ways... that’s why you need a codec...)
divx will usually do, or the xvid codec pack (as recommended by many on this thread). i guess the k-lite pack will work as well, but for me divx and xvid suffice. and i don’t know who said it, but do not just download something and install it (unless you want to keep using that system restore function windows offers you ;-)... oh, well... at least that will keep bob happy ;-))
anyway, if you do not want to download a codec pack, try the cute little free program AVIcodec (already mentioned by someone on one of the first few pages on this thread - to download: http://avicodec.duby.info/)
some people try to import mov, mpeg, mp4 files into windows movie maker... that doesn’t work, unfortunately... i have tried different things to make it work, but the only thing is to convert the files to avi or wmv - it’s a suboptimal solution, i know, but it’s the only thing that works for me.
to convert files, i use ZC Video Converter, which was a Give Away of the Day a little while ago. but there must be plenty of free converter programs out there as well...
good luck! and once again: do not use the bob-restore-your-computer-solution!!! ;-)

matthew kirkland Guest | iv tried everything possible.. i downloaded a torrent downloader, i tried all the configurations. i didnt use system restore because the codec thing never worked for me from the get-go and plus it fucks up my computer every time i do it and i still get
avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.
IF ANY OF YOU KNOWS HOW TO FIX IT NOW WOULD BE A GOOD TIME TO TELL US!!! lol
