rukhsanaphotography Guest | Hi All,
I solved my issues with this today, as this website was one that kept turning up in my searches i thought it would be relevant to post my solution here.
My Problems
File would not load into windows movie maker was my inital issue.
I got to the stage where it was essential to convert the file using a movie converter. This creates another entire issue there are so many converters out there, some work some don’t.
I used a converter named
SUPER © v2007.build.23
at website
http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
This provided 1/2 a solution it would convert the file to play in windows media player and import into movie maker....however when i dragged the clip into the time line i could hear but not see the clip.
After more reserch i decided to download a codec pack called
k-lite from
http://www.codecguide.com/
allthough i actually downloaded from this place
http://www.majorgeeks.com/K-Lite_Mega_Codec_Pack_d5230.html
when installing the K-lite codec pack i uninstalled all the codecs it suggested i uninstall and agreed to the recommendations the installation wizard suggested.
I can now finally import and edit what were once files created by a panasonic hybrid movie camera into windows movie maker.
heres the short guide to it
download the program from here to convert your files to wmv format.
http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
After you convert the file you will most likely be able to import your movie and play it on wmp but when you drag it into the time line of movie maker you will hear but not see it. If this is true then download the codec pack below
http://www.majorgeeks.com/K-Lite_Mega_Codec_Pack_d5230.html
Good luck !!
I am using windows xp it worked a treat

Note The MPEG2 format has several codecs that are not supported by Windows Movie Maker. Even if you have downloaded and installed these codecs on your computer, files in the MPEG2 format may not work in Windows Movie Maker or may cause other problems. Converting the MPEG2 format to another compatible format may work for most MPEG2 files. However, some MPEG2 codecs include copy protection schemes that will prevent you from converting the file.

I had a similar problem. I went to Options then to the Compatibility tab. The correct codec was unchecked, when I checked it, the problem was fixed.
Oh, thanx!!!!
I’ve tryed almost everything suggested before your post and it didn’t work for me
After I’ve read your suggestion and checked ffdshow my Movie Maker finally works!!!! Ahhhh!!! Thanks a lot!

UMkeith Guest | I’ve tried all the suggested fixes but the only thing that finally worked for me (Sony Camcorder-MPEG2 format, XP OS) was downloading Decoder Pack 3.1.1.7 from this site.
http://www.yatoshi.com/en/index.php?p=downloads&PHPSESSID=52640695b0c8ad3b9ed553b64776a020
Make sure to match up your OS and after downloading the Decoder Pack open Movie Maker and go to ">Tools >Options >Compatibility” and ensure all the boxes are checked.

HELLO!!!!!!!!
I HAVE FOUND A WAY BUT IT SEEMS EVERYBODY IS TO LAZY TO READ “ALL” THE POSTS....BECAUSE IF THEY DID, THEY WOULD HAVE TRIED MY WAY...Sorry getting off, but I just dont understand why people I saying that they havent found a solution, somebody please posts if this did not work for them....
AS I SAI
“I have found a way. Go to your windows start menu then to programs, accesories, system tools, and then click on “system restore”. After this just choose the date before this error had occured.
Note: If you had installed any new programs after this error you will loose them but not the information you saved on them. Example: I had lost my iTunes program but when I reinstalled I still had all my songs on the program. So dont worry about loosing any vital information."
Instead of killing youself trying to find codec, do this.....It worked very well for me....
NOw I hope I dont see anymore “But still no answer”....I have one!!! Use it!!!
My windows movie maker has NEVER worked correctly. So resetting it back to a system restore date would do my no good. I have always had this error

mike2121 Guest | I have an .avi file that I know is Divx encoded. I am using AoA Ripper to copy a protected DVD. I have gone to most of the sites and I am sure that I have both the Xvid and Divx Codec on my computer, but for some reason WMM still won’t work. I have gone to the compatabilities tab, but those specific codec are not there. This worked fine on my home computer, but not on my lapytop. Any one know how to get WMM to register the codec?

Caca Guest | hey everyone i have found a solution that does not involve that system restore bulls***.!
THIS IS HOW U FIX THE PROBLEM
first go to windows media player and check if the file plays. if it does then ur sweet
now open up movie maker click on 'tools' then 'options'. click on the compatibility tab at the top. u will notice a box at the bottom with checkboxes. go through them and tick all the boxes.
u see these are all the codecs on ur comp. WMP uses them but for some reason movie maker does not cause it thinks it causes problems.
anywhoo then open the file again and u will be sweet.
cheers.
