“C:\.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again."
What does it say here?
“the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer."
That means you have to download it!!
Do a quick google search “download avi codec” and you come up with a website, www.free-codecs.com. Do a quick search around there for an avi codec and you find “http://www.free-codecs.com/download/AVIcodec.htm”
Download that and install it.

Silboi Guest | OK SO I CAN VIEW THE VIDEO I WANT TO USE WITH WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER in MEDIA PLAYER BUT IT SAYS IT STILL CANT IMPORT THE THING

Death666 Guest | For those wanting a better program for video editing, I’d go for Cyberlink’s Power Director.
I just started using it a few weeks ago and have removed Moviemaker from my PC.
It can import those .flv files, avi, etc, and even re-encode them into other formats like .avi, .wmv, etc. It can even upload the created file to your youtube account.

natcorr Guest | a system restore isn’t the answer to everything what if someone dosent have system restore enabled hmmmmm I know what you thinking. Your thinking why did they disable it in the first place. But I have the same codec problem ive tried codec after codec even installed a few codecs packs still doesn’t work. I think it may be a case that the necessary codecs are installed on the computer its just windows moviemaker cant locate them. So my question is how do you let windows moviemaker know where the codecs are installed?

Rionosuke Aoshi Guest | Hello all. This is my first time to post on this forum and considering there are over 30 pages instead of reading through them all i’ll just post my question. I am using Windows Movie Maker and am having problems opening some FLV files and others open fine. I have downloaded the k-lite pack and now can play all my files fine on Windows Media Player but as I said only some (FLV files) are importable by WMM. Suggestions?

Rionosuke Aoshi Guest | Also another note WMM has suddenlu slowed down alot and sometimes freezes altogther. Is this because of K-lite and if so how do i fix it?

Xallu Guest | It keeps saying somthign about a codec for me but It doesnt in an exact sense say that anything is missing, Ive tried to impost videos from my camra to make a series of short vieos put together and it keeps giving me a freaking error message-It makes me sooo angry!
I have no clue what to do and the so called, “Help” page has nothing that is usefull to me...

Xallu Guest | The file C:\Users\tom\Documents\extream.MOV cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.
Help please...?
I already tries the restarting thing and it dont work :/

HELLO!!!!!!!!
I HAVE FOUND A WAY BUT IT SEEMS EVERYBODY IS TO LAZY TO READ “ALL” THE POSTS....BECAUSE IF THEY DID, THEY WOULD HAVE TRIED MY WAY...Sorry getting off, but I just dont understand why people I saying that they havent found a solution, somebody please posts if this did not work for them....
AS I SAI
“I have found a way. Go to your windows start menu then to programs, accesories, system tools, and then click on “system restore”. After this just choose the date before this error had occured.
Note: If you had installed any new programs after this error you will loose them but not the information you saved on them. Example: I had lost my iTunes program but when I reinstalled I still had all my songs on the program. So dont worry about loosing any vital information."
Instead of killing youself trying to find codec, do this.....It worked very well for me....
NOw I hope I dont see anymore “But still no answer”....I have one!!! Use it!!!
DUDE! Chill out. System restore worked to fix my audio configuration a few weeks ago, but when I tried it with this, nothing changed. It didn’t work on my computer.
I can’t import anything onto my Windows Movie Maker.
Does everyone who is havung this problem have Windows Vista. It’s been causeing a lot of trouble, that might be the cause of this one as well.

Rionosuke Aoshi Guest | will someone pls help me. I have windows movie maker and can’t put .flv1 files onto it to edit them. What do I do. I uninstalled k-lite because yeah i could view all the FLV’s in Windows media player but all it did was freaking freeze up my Windows movie maker. Is there some software out there i can buy to edit movies and not have to worry about this codec crap. I have been looking for sometime but I want to make sure i buy one that can play stuff downloaded off of Itunes as well. Thanks
