Well, WMM will work now, (though it’s a tad slower now).

I’m sure that in downloading the codec packs suggested here will help your problem, but I advise that you figure out EXACTLY which codec(s) you are missing rather than downloading a bundle of codecs and hope the one you need is in there. (which is a hit-or-miss situation)

AVIcodec is a program that will analyze the video file and tell you which codecs are needed, and which ones you are missing. THEN, it will give you the link to the site where the codec is located, if you are in fact missing that particular one (click “web” button).

http://avicodec.duby.info/

that’s where the program is, and I wish you all good luck!

just managed to fix it on mine smiley. make sure the movie will play (or if not go download ffshow this should sort out most things) then go in to movie maker. click tools/options. go to the last tab and make sure that all of the codecs have a tick by them. now try importing the file again hope this works smiley

i have found what everyone here has been looking for. google the term “Theorica Divx ;-) Codecs”. you’ll find a free package of all the codecs for your system to make anything and everything work. once you install it youll get a small pop up window with some odd info on it. JUST X OUT THE WINDOW. if you hit ok it will uninstall all the work you just did and youll have to do it again. no harm done, just annoying. another word of advice the file “ffdshow.ax” or something along those lines will cause movie maker not to work. use your windows search to find that exact file. once found delete all the components labelled “ffdshow” and everything should work like a swiss watch. happy movie making smiley

PS Drop me a little gratitude at tails102@aol.com

Thank you Gregg...I had installed the codecs from Windows website and WMM still wasn’t working. Went into Tools/Options and did what you suggested! Hallelujiah! Been troubleshooting for days.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Hi,
had the same problem. avi-files were played in wmp but not im wmm.
solved the problem:

click “extras” -> open “options” -> 3rd register “compatibility” -> disable “AVI_PASS”

hope this helps you, too.

I too have this problem. I’ve read ALL the posts. I’m not going to restore to an earlier time and undo other changes, settings, installations etc, looking for a point sometime back when it used to work. The box to allow automatic installation of codecs wasn’t checked, but I checked it, restarted Movie Maker, and still the .avi files won’t import from my (network) hard drive.

NOW HERE’S AN INTERESTING DISCOVERY: The .avi files are on another computer, and I’m importing them through a network. On that computer, Properties for one of those files indicates video compression with DivX. The computer with Movie Maker doesn’t show anything under Properties about video compression. I can, however, view the file on that computer with Media Viewer.

Oops, sorry. I didn’t see page 2 of the forum. I’ll try the avicodec site as soon as the WMP10 update is finished downloading.

The leads on this forum have been very helpful. One of the biggest problems with this issue is that Microsoft’s knowledge base makes no mention of it at all (that I can find), and it looks like a very common problem that’s been around for months.

I only realized what was going on when I looked at properties of the file with a computer that had the DivX codec installed. That computer isn’t the one that I use with WMM, though. I followed a little link at the avicodec site to DIVX.COM and downloaded some 7 or 8 mb. (now I remember doing that on the former machine).

Bob, not everyone wants to do a system restore to make wmm wotk so stop shouting!!!! This come from Microsoft:
“Although you can play a file in Microsoft Windows Media Player, you may not be able to import the file into Windows Movie Maker even though this article lists that kind of file. You may not be able to import the file if the codec that was used to encode the audio or video is not a codec that is included with Windows XP. In that case, you may be able to re-encode the video or audio by using Windows Media Encoder, and then import the video or audio. "
I’m not saying it’s solution just info...

Same fucking problem here. I downloaded thegspot program and i’ll get back to you on if it helps, but right now i’m on hold with customer support at my PC manufacturer. And if you don’t know when the last time it worked was, maybe three months ago, then doing a system restore to that date will fuck your PC more than any fucking codec error can. i’ll get back to you guys.
