mcrlover17 Guest | The file C:\Documents and Settings\Nicky\My Documents\My Music\katies\Torchwood.S01E12.Captain.Jack.Harkness.HDTV.XviD-BiA.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.
Happened to me to..and no..your “solution” doesnt work bob2

Ben-Me too Guest | I get the same message...but the video plays on windows media player?!? (Another words I think the codec must be installed. I have read the back up and restore idea that doesn’t work b/c I’m not sure this file EVER worked in WMM. Any suggestions ?

urbanality Guest | I’ve been having this problem too. Just solved it by installing the XviD codec (I got mine from softpedia but I’ll include both links here) after the DivX codec. Now WMM opens my avi files flawlessly. Hope this can help some of you...
Here’s the softpedia link:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Codec-Packs-Video-Codecs/Koepi-XviD.shtml
Here’s official XviD page:
http://www.xvid.org/
Good luck. | |

urbanality Guest | Thought I’d better just point out that Xvid is (apparently) not the same thing as DivX - as far as WMM is concerned anyway. I didn’t realise this as the avi files played fine in Media Player or whatever.

Liamus Guest | OK PEOPLE!!!!
To hell with system restores and crazy sites and systems to diagnose problems and issues, I HAVE THE SOLUTION!!!
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/XP_Codec_Pack.htm
Go there, download the full Windows XP Codec pack. It has no spyware or adware of any kind and is completely free.
And if you’re looking for a place to advertize your videos, upload them to youtube and post a link on:

hickary dickary dock Guest | i got this problem wit movies maker
when i import a video its says
The file C:\.AVI cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.
i tried to do the one were you windows start menu then to programs, accesories, system tools, and then click on “system restore”. After this just choose the date before this error had occured.
i tried to find were it says it stuffed up but it dosnt tell me which date

Liamus Guest | Thank you Wandering Oddity, I really do think alot of people passed that one over. Everyone I’ve talked to who’s had this issue has been able to solve it with this pack. It gives you the XVID codecs, plus whatever other codecs you might need with Windows.
I’m serious guys, follow the link (it’s in the quote in the last post)

I found a better video codec for any video playback window media layer and windows movie Maker. This also works with divx . it is called FFD Show I think it is the best out there here is the irl:http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm
OMG THANK YOU!!! XD It worked yay!!

MikeJD Guest | Bob2 System restore is fine as a solution to this problem IF windows movie maker WAS working fine. If it never has, as in my own case, then you can system restore as much as you like and it won’t resolve the problem.
I have downloaded codecs and I also get the error message 'Error when trying to download codecs'.
If anyone finds a realistic solution to this I’d be happy to hear it.
