MP Guest | hi bob2,
Restoring windows to some previous date removes all program, plugins, etc installed since then. It is a long time for me now since I can’t import avi.
Is there any other way to fix the problem? Anyone know what caused the problem?

I found a solution that worked for me on another thread at this web site. Once you install this and double click on the video file, Windows Media should automatically play the file with the picture that was previously missing.
hi all...the problem that you have is that you don’t have the codecs installed to play the movies...goto www.free-codecs.com and download ffdshow (top left colum of the page) to a folder, then double click it to run it, it installs automatically and fixes the problem, that will sort things out for you...good luck
Brian
this works everyone
i know cause i tried it and it worked fine

Riko Guest | I have followed Keichi Sukichi’s advise and it worked for me. Try this before installing any additional codecs. In Windows Movie Maker:
“Tools — — ->Options — — ->Compatibility
Once under the Compatiblity Tab, scroll down the list of codecs and on the second to last codec, it will say 'ffdshow MPEG-4 Video Decoder'. Check the box next to it and hit 'OK', then exit Windows Movie Maker. Reload it and import the file."

Patchsam Guest | Hi, I seem to be having the same problem here. System restore is not going to solve a codec problem because it only restores your computer to an earlier date. The error is saying that the codec required is not installed on the coomputer. Anyway, how do we find it?
Anyone here have an answer?

jdncoke Guest | Hi ya .. I need help . I have Movie Maker and I was making Vids Fine untill one day it said.
The file C:\.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.
Now I dont know alot about it so I need help please.

CodecGuru_NotReally_ Guest | To fix the problem you DO need a codec. Your movie maker application can’t do it most likely (who knows why? Prolly not even God or Gates knows why). To get it go here http://www.divxmovies.com/codec/ It’s DivX, plain and simple. It’s free too.
