KarmaPerfected Guest | Ok let me clarify all of this for you hotheads. Lee, you were right in saying that changing the extention of a file can cause it to error, and gives no hope of opening the file as you wish to or formatting it as you want it. But, there’s a catch.
Media files (mp3,mp4,mpg,mpeg,avi,wma,etc.) execute based on what the (.ext) defines since they use plugins to run them. (media players like WinMP,RealPlayer,iTunes,Quicktime will all recognize a file and claim it with their icon.) Of course only the default media program specified will brand their logo on these files, but rt-clicking and selecting a program to run a file with will change the program it opens with. The moral of the story is that since the media file requires a plugin to be of any value, the extension specified in the file name is very important.
Same way for archive files and documents. Once again, they use a plugin application (WinZip, WinRar,etc, Word, WordPad, Notepad, etc.) So, if you change the extension from .rar to .iso, you will get an error msg. However, no damage is done to the file and changing it back will correct how the plugin opens the program and fix the problem.
Stand-alone applications or programs (.exe) are the only files you can rename without causing any difference in the way they function. This is how many people get viruses. They’re mailed a document with an attachment labeled Form1.doc, so they think nothing of it clicking on it to see what it is. What they dont realize is Form1.doc is the name of the executable file, so the real name of the file is (Form1.doc).exe
Summary: rename your archive files and media files all you want, it won’t change the formatting, only the way they’re opened. It doens’t do damage to the file either. You’ll still need to convert to iso using a rar to iso converter. Search google to find one.
P.S. If you want to send a virus, rename the application with a .doc ending. Muahahaha.

McKnight Guest | Hasn’t anyone heard of mounting their .cue/iso files on Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools. Saves a lot of messing around and if you still want to burn it for your dvd player Alcohol burns is to cd/dvd. You can also create iso’s from cd/dvd

CodeVic Guest | This mostly about bin and que file pairs, tks.
Read all youz guysez posts but sorry cuz I don right gud enlish like ya'// and my dickshunnary is way over on the shelf — so — but - start to finish - I got a zip file which I unzipped out of the download zip with Winzip - seemed to work — didn’t try it with Winrar yet - so but - now - if I have a bin and a que file, am I good for the next step?
Do I just show Nero the que file and let her fly??
You should also tell people if there is any other way to convert these to harddisk, instead of burning to a CD. I mean none of you said burning to CD is absolutely necessary.
Should I have used Winrar instead of Winzip?
Or do I now must I burn to CD with Nero pointing it to the xxxxyz.que file.
thks

CodeVic Guest | http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/bin_cue_with_nero.cfm
That link gives good step by step for using Nero to burn .bin files. Also called binary files. I found in Nero that the wizard gets in the way.
Cancel out of the Wizard in Nero Burning Rom. (You also don’t need to use drag and drop to a new iso burn window at all.)
Instead just click Nero Burning Rom main menuitem File > then > Burn Image.
When the Open dialogue comes up, navigate to your .cue file usging the dialogue window. then click open.
Oh. Right. Have a blank CD in the drive first.
Out

Oh, and for the good bit. I am a IT Consultant (Americanese translation - 'Computer tech') I contract blue chips only, and even there I see guys with no clue about the basics. Rest assured the saying 'Guru' does not exist in IT and it never will. Frequently people look to solve problems with complex solutions when the problem itself can be a fixed with a basic remedy that you or I may have just forgotten to apply.
