Generally speaking I would recommend staying away from using codec packs. They have their use when they contain a codec you can’t find anywhere else or if you don’t have time to search for codecs individually. The people who bundle them together have limited time and hardware to test for compatibility across a large range of hardware.
There have been many horror stories about incompatibilities arising from the installation of codec packs (some of the worst resulting in reformats!), and because of the breadth (“broadness”) of the pack, pinpointing the exact cause is difficult, if not impossible. I should also give the other side of the story and say there’s also tons of people who have been using codec packs for years without a hitch, but whether YOUR machine still works or chokes after installing one is as predictable as a dice roll. That’s a chance I wouldn’t take.
