These file types are used by cd writing/burning software to save an image of the complete contents of a CD/DVD.

ISO
This format (ISO9660 cd-image) is widely supported by programs. Nero Burning ROM and MagicISO are but a few programs that support this format.

BIN/CUE
This format was invented with the cd writing software CDRWin, but since it’s release it has been adapted by many other applications, ie. Nero Burning ROM.

MDF/MDS
These files are used by the program Alcohol 120%, but are also supported by other applications, ie. MagicISO.

Yeah, Download formats can be tricky, but I would go with .ISO. It’s the best compression type that compresses good, but not so mcuh that it has problems extracting (Other than the people who can’t compress them right... you always run into those), Like you said: I use Alcohol 120% to burn all my games. There’s no confusion to which program to use to what format it supports; Alcohol 120% supports all of them! Anyway, hope this stuff helps anyone new to the burning world.

Me too, I downloaded the MDF and MDS files for Pirates! but I don’t have a clue what I do with them. I’m trying to read around and there are mentions of I need to make an ISO and a bin?

I just want to get the game to play... but I’m a real computer idiot and have no idea how to. Can anyone clarify the steps?

With MDF or MDS files, you can use Alcohol 120% to emulate (to see if it works) then burn it to CD’s. I don’t know if it burnd DVD quality or DVD movies to DVD-R or DVD -RW or not. I gotts get back to you on that. I don’t see why it shouldn’t. With .BIN filesm use Isobuster to extracr them. Just use a simple burning program like Nero to burn it to a CD. Lunch Nero, and burn a “Data Disk” and drag the game data files and let it burn.

Thanks for the help. I got a more experienced friend to explain it to me, and now that he did (yes, I’m an idiot when it comes to these things) I finally understand what you guys mean. Quite easy once understood, and I got the game playing. Thanks!

Hey, i downloaded a game but it game in 4 iso files...cd1,2,3,4. So seeing as i have no idea wat to do i extracted the first one into a folder and then clicked install...after a lil time went by it asked to insert cd 2....it doesn’t give me an option to find a file so i have no idea wat to do. (btw the game is the sims 2 incase that helps)

Uh... since you’re using a virtual drive, I guess the best way is to just make yourself a virtual drive. I myself dealt with mdf/mds files, but I think Alcohol 120% deals with iso too? I can’t be sure of that, but the thing is, use a program like that to create a virtual drive. When the prompt comes for disc two, go to your virtual drive and just mount the disc 2 file.

dumb question... in windows explorer, my .MDS files do not have any icon next to them. what program do they “open with”?

I copied a DVD to my hard drive with DVD Decrypter and it created the ".MDS” files along with the ISO files. The “ISO” files have the DVD Decrypter icon and open with it but the MDS fiels have none.

I don’t have any for mine either. But I do believe if you found a program to open your mds files (Alcohol 120% is the most suggested) in a virtual drive, then I suppose you can use that.

Downloading, Cracking and Burning with software is the easiest thing ever, that it probably took longer to learn my ABC’s and 123’s in Kindergarden! It’s REALLY STRAIGHT FORWARD, ectract files with Isobuster, and burn with Nero, OR use Alcohol to burn the MDF or MDS files! People who can’t do it either sucks at computers, or doesn’t know what they’re doing, or has a piece of shit computer that doesn’t do jack crap correctly. If you can’t do it, don’t call yourself a true computer guy!

Hi there everybody. I need some help too
I’ve got the ISO files of Sid M’s Pirates, for playdisc 1 and 2. The game is fully installed but when i try the autorun it says i need the “original Pirates disc”.
Should I burn disc 1 or 2 as an iso file or should I extract the files first and then burn them onto disc?
Cheers in advance.

With Sims2, the mds and mdf file have small sizes (about 2M). But with other application, these files may have a very large size (660M). What’s a different? If I have a mds file with small size, would I have to need a mdf file to use with it? How can I make the mds and mdf file with small sizes?

For one, I never called myself a true computer guy. In fact, I proudly label myself upon the computer idiots. But I help if I know something, because I know damn well I would wish to be helped when I need it.

Ah, Marc... I got my Pirates through mds and mdf but had the same problem. I do not know if the iso solution is the same, but use a no_cd key (crack) to fix your pirates.exe file and you should be able to play fine. If you still can’t find one, leave an email and I’ll mail you my copy of the crack.

As for Google... In my case, so far the ones I have are pretty big. A good 600-700 MB for mdf and a small 2 MB for the mds. Or it could be the other way round, I keep getting them mixed up. One is always big while the other is small. As for whether you need a mdf file to use the mds, probably. At least when burning with Alcohol 120% they were both required.

I answer only what my limited knowledge can give... Sorry if I can’t do better.
