Thanks guys. I’ll try those things, but I don’t think it’s the file; it was sent to me by a friend who says it plays fine on his PC. I only have a pentium II, would this affect my PC’s ability to play avi files?

I still don’t understand why it didn’t conver to vcd - i tried it twice. One time, the visuals were still shaking, the next time, when I seperated the audio and video streams, the vcd had frequent blackouts, where you could hear the sound, but with no visuals. That time, when the visuals appeared, they were fine.

I appreciate your help though - thanks!

It’s doubtful that the CPU would make much of a difference, but I’m probably right to assume that you’re running a reasonably out-of-date system generally, if you have a PII?
Let me guess - 64MB RAM and a 16MB Triton graphics card (or something in that ballpark). Right? My advice is that you need new RAM and a new graphics card, but the chances are you’ll need a new motherboard and a new case for that. Throw in a new CPU (because that really is ancient), and you might as well buy a hard drive as well. Don’t worry, though - you won’t need a new monitor. Probably.

Seriously - update time. My advice is to ask your friend to download QuickSFV and create an SFV file for whatever file it is he has, and then send that to you. If you then run it using QuickSFV (which you’ll have to download too - its free though), that’ll check the integrity of your file against his (which works). It’s a tiny programme, but very useful, and the SFV files themselves are usually no greater than 5 or 6kb, so they’ll even fit on an email.
Just Google QuickSFV, and you should find it no probs, and that’ll confirm you’re looking at less... facile problems smiley

Good luck, all the best

ffdshow is low on systemresources, so they that first.

I’m getting lots of rainbow discoloration on various .wmv files. Anyone know why or what codec could resolve that issue?

Use the GSpot Codec Information Appliance to check what codec you need. Not sure about the URL - google it.

I see a lot of complaints on this thread.. about 30 minutes ago, I had no idea what a codec was, and now I got my problem fixed without having to ask anyone.

My advice: dont wait around to be helped. Figure it out on your own.

Sorry about the delayed response - your suggestions are all excellent - I think I may as well just get a new PC, because I tried comparing them, and the file seems fine - and now a couple of other avi files I’ve downloaded, like the new King Kong footage from the official website, is having exactly the same problem playing on my PC

I still think I need a codec, but I may never know which one!

Hello BF,
This 1’s 4u
I’ve XP w/WM Player10
MP3 download’s were fine to playback, until I started downloading Mpeg and Avi’s. Then message I got was " Error Downloading Codec”. Playedback w/o video. After researching, I downloaded FFDSHOW20050630.exe - which fixed the problem, I’ve both A/V Playback.[I haven’t yet checked All my Videos].
My next step is to Burn this onto my CD, I’m using NTI CD&DVD Maker 7.
When I go toBurn I get the messge " No Video Codec”
Any Thoughts?
Thanx

Chandra — Assuming you can play the file you’re trying to burn, there is probably something wrong with your burning software. My advice is to download and install Nero instead of NTI (which is pretty rubbish in comparison) and see if that works.
If not, download UltraISO, and create a .iso image containing the video file you want to burn. Then, use Nero to burn that image.

Hope this helps.
