How to convert .rmvb to DVD playable formats:

What you need:
1. Nero Vision (in Nero burning suite)
2. RealAlternative (preferred: Realplayer free suite)
3. WinAvi (preferred: Ultra RM Converter)

Procedure for converting rmvb to avi/divx formats:
1. Make sure files and their folders have no characters other than alphabets or numbers. (*^&%# are not acceptable)
2. Convert rmvb to avi or mpg using WinAvi.
3. Check each new file to make sure that the audio and video quality are good without any problems.
4. Burn the new files to DVD using Nero as you would normally do.

Troubleshooting
a) Audio/video is off-balance or there is no audio.
- check to see if the audio bitrate is 128kbps. If not do so. Oftentimes changing the converstion bitrate (for audio or video) will resolve the problem.
- If WinAvi doesn’t seem to work well, try Ultra RM Converter. Install Realplayer instead of Real Alternative.
- Tweak the output format to mpg or some other file system still readable by Nero.

b) I can play my rmvb files but not convert any of them. I get 'file not recognized' errors with conversion softwares.
- make sure your files and their folders are all correctly names with no characters other than the alphabet/numbers.
- install Realplayer. Some conversion softwares do not recognize RealAlternative and will not be able to use it for conversion.
- If WinAvi do not work, try Ultra RM Converter.

Hopefully this helps. I know it took me a long time (+ dozens of useless programs) to get it right.

NOTE: even within the same batch of rmvb files, you may need to use different output formats during conversion. For example, you might need to convert file #1 to mpg and file #2 to avi. As long as they’re all readable by the same burning software, you can group them together to be burned on to the same DVD with menu, or as vob.

Drop me a line if it works (or doesn’t work) for you, or if you have a better solution. And no, none of the other converters would recognize my rmvb files.
