That’s very vague, because there are so many implementations of mpeg-4. Also, I’m surprised the camera didn’t come with any software to allow for playback on your pc.
First you have to look at the file extensions you have.
Are they asf or wmv? Then they’re likely in a Windows Media container and you would need to feed the file into avicodec (available at http://avicodec.duby.info) to find out which codec they use. If they use either Microsoft’s ISO mpeg-4 v1 (fourcc MP4S) or v1.1 (fourcc M4S2) codec, then you’d get them from one of the first three downloads on this page
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx
Are they avi? If so they probably use one of the flavors of mpeg-4 out there (xvid, divx, 3ivx, or microsoft’s (non-ISO) mpeg-4 v1, v2, or v3). To be sure feed the file into avicodec, or gspot (available at http://www.headbands.com/gspot).
Are they mov? Then they’re mpeg-4 files in a QuickTime container (the apple mpeg-4 codec is unique), and only QuickTime Player (available at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone) or QuickTime Alternative (http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/finalbuilds.htm) can play them.
Are they mp4? Then you would need to play them with QuickTime Player as well. If you insist on playing mp4 files in Windows Media Player, you can get either 3ivx (www.3ivx.com) or the mpegable directshow (ds) decoder (www.mpegable.com).

jasper Guest | Hi, with regards to not being able to view the asf files i had the same problem. i reinstalled xp service pack 2 and for some reason its working perfectly now! so the m4s2 codec must be included in that somewhere so if you havent installed service pack 2 give it a try. hope this helps.

Use a utility like gspot, avicodec, or videoinspector to find out which codecs you’re missing.
(to jasper)
Service Pack 2 for Windows XP has Windows Media Player 9 bundled in it, which I do believe carries the m4s2 codec in it. It wouldn’t be my first choice for fixing the m4s2 problem though (SP2 is 264M .
