Identifying codecs in QuickTime Player

This will work as long as QuickTime can open the file.

Steps for QuickTime 6 and below are at the bottom of this post.

In QuickTime 7, after you open the file, go to Window, Show Movie Inspector.



The codecs should be listed on the Format line. Usually the video codec will be listed on the top line, and the audio codec below. If the media file only contains one stream (audio or video), then you’ll only get one line.




In QuickTime 6 and below (down to 3 I believe), you can get information about the codecs by going to Movie, Get Movie Properties.



On the left pane, select Video (or Audio) Track, and on the right pane select Format. The codec is normally listed on the Data Format line.
