when I download a movie it says the player doesnt have the right codecs. How do you know what codec is missing and is there a player that I should be using to avoud this problem.

Use a tool like gspot, avicodec, or mediainfo to find out what codec(s) a media file uses. Then search for it on the web (or look for it in the downloads section of this site).
You could try alternate players like VLC Media Player which have a lot of bundled codecs in them, but you can’t expect any player to handle ALL formats (which is why the diagnostics utilities come in handy).
