Hye

I have two large .avi files for movies. I am using windows XP SP2.

I am having trouble playing and renaming the file.

When i double click on it nothing happens and cant play the file. When i start VLC media player and select open from menu and then select the file i get an error saying “file name is not valid”. I am suspecting that this is due to very very long file name.

So i want to rename the file. to do this i tried to right click on file but i only get a very limited right click menu. It doesnt include cut, copy, rename, delete or properties button.

I havent tried DOS because neither do i know the commands to do it and secondly i dont know dos names of the files (cant right click and see in properties)

Any ideas on this!!!!!!

Many Thanks

Filenames can be an impediment to playing files sometimes. The first case is, like you stated, very long filenames. The other case is odd/foreign characters (though this isn’t as much an issue anymore as it used to be).
Usually renaming is the solution. When you rename, pick a short name with roman western characters if possible. While you’re at it, be sure to check you have file extensions showing. To do that, go to control panel (classic view), folder options, and uncheck the box “hide extensions for known file types”.

There’s some cases where renaming may fail. The first one that comes to mind is if you don’t have permission. The second is a bit peculiar and it has to do with file system limitations. I think NTFS has a limitation of 1024 characters for path, and 255 for filename (or somewhere in those ballparks). What happens sometimes is you move a directory (folder) and make it a subfolder of a location that has an already very long pathname. If the OS doesn’t check the destination, you may be unable to access or even rename anything in the subdirectories. One solution to this would be to move the directory that contains the non-accessible files to the root directory (maybe C:\) and/or rename it to something really short (in windows explorer just drag and drop the folder then rename).
