When I try to play certain avi file with Divx Player, it says “this file contains a track in an unknown format (code'''') format. You may need ot install a Directshow decoder for this video format in order to play this file.) What Do I have to do?

Regular Rep: 5 Joined: 20 Nov 2004 Posts: 1,269 | It’s probably missing the codec. To find out which one use a diagnostics utility like gspot, avicodec, or mediainfo. Then search for the codec on the web.

Regular Rep: 5Joined: 20 Nov 2004 Posts: 1,269 | The fourcc says H264. I don’t know of any standalone decoder for it, but you can get ffdshow-tryouts. The package installs a lot of codecs, however if all you need is H.264, uncheck all the boxes during install except H.264 (you’ll get to it at the window where it lists the video codecs).

I don’t have much experience with subtitles. According to

you might want to check the avi is the exact same name as the srt file.
If that doesn’t work try Media Player Classic. When you click file, open (NOT file, quick open), you get to pick both the video file and the subtitle file. MPC is a very clean (single file - no install) so you can just unzip it on your desktop and run it (and delete it if you don’t like it). VideoLan (link at the top of the page) should also be able to handle subtitles.
If all else fails try vobsub as in the link I posted. I don’t have any experience with it so I don’t guarantee results.
