"Decompress: adobe premiere 4.2” ain’t no codec I ever heard of. What exactly do the codec box and the name box say in the upper right in gspot?

It’s odd you can’t play the file at all because certain versions of Windows Media Player (depending on which versions and patches you have) will play the stream it can decode and ignore the one it doesn’t have a decoder for (whether that be audio or video). As a matter of fact, Media Player Classic should do just that. If you’ve tried WMP 9/10/11 and MPC already, try WMP 6.4 (click start, run, then type mplayer2, press enter, then drag and drop your video onto the WMP window).

My first thought what you said you only need the audio was you can’t feed it into VirtualDub because it requires being able to read all the streams. I kind of wish Avery Lee would allow a feature to ignore the undecodable stream if needed (so you can salvage just audio or video). You’d just open the AVI in VirtualDub, and click file, save wav.

You can try to use VideoCharge Full.

There there is an opportunity of extraction of a sound in a sound file (wav or MP3)
