I can't get .mp4 file extensions to work

Those will play fine with VLC Media Player though. I’m not sure why, however I suspect they may be encoded with non-standard tools, or be non MPEG-compliant. It’s possible it’s not an mp4 file. Sometimes people dump junk on the net and just rename the extension. To check and make sure, use gspot and feed your file into it.
