I cannot seem to play my MPEG2 files and M2V files. What codecs do i need and where can i download them from?

You have several solutions:
- Play it with VideoLan (free - http://www.videolan.org)
- Play it with Media Player Classic (also free) - http://www.gabest.org
- Get an mpeg-2 decoder like the Elecard MPEG-2 decoder (not free anymore I don’t think - elecard.com) - will also play seamlessly in Windows Media Player. (there’s probably other decoders out there, some are possibly free - google to find them.)
- Get DVD playing software like PowerDVD or WinDVD (usually pay). The file will play seamlessly in Windows Media Player.

Wrong. Windows Media Player will NOT solve the problem because you must buy a 3rd party MPEG-2 decoder. This is due to licensing issues.

Decoders cost money (Sonic, Intervideo, and other places sell them) which would be fine if this stuff worked. Unfortunately, they often do not. I have a perfectly good MPEG-2 decoder on my system yet I still cannot play files with the .m2v extension. This is BS, and when you buy software you end up in a situation where you will be buying something that won’t work (*ALL* PC software is highly buggy. The software industry sucks) and you won’t get a refund.

actually the windows media player will play the files. mine tells me that it doesnt recognize the file, then asks if i still want to play it. once you click YES, it plays it without a problem.

Well, media player will not download the mpeg2 codec, but there are plenty LEGEL players like VLC player who can play the files.

Most of the time the decoder if free (No licences required) But the encoders cost money. That’s why you can find free players, but never free encoders for MPEG2. And if i’m not mistaken (Haven’t realy read into it) Elecard MPEG-2 decoder is the origional licence holder of MPEG2. But i’m anything but shure about that.

The most commen problem u run into when playing video’s from the internet is that they use a buggy/beta/crappy encoder. And the decoding program is left to suffer from this. That’s why they invented splitters. (Split up vid and audio and render them appart, because the combination is what’s killing the player) But in my experience splitters cause lots of lag in the audio.

Your best option is to download some mega packs (Don’t install multiple at the same time) and not to select to much in the list.

There used to be a program called Hotspot who would tell u if you could render the streams seperate and combined. This would generaly give u a good insight, but i can’t find a link to the program anymore. sorry..

Actually, Windows Media Player DOES play these files (as per Ronburgundy) ... video AND sound, fully synchronised, from a single m2v file! ... just tried it, and track is completing 100% successful as I write!

I have a avi/mpg/mpg2/wmv converter and I just convert it into a mpg file. It plays. But I did buy my converter so I guess this is no help...

So the bottom line guys...m2v sucks...:-(

I downloaded a documentary about black metal and its in m2v format...I downloaded it for about two (2) bloody weeks....I tried to play it in VLAN and Windows Media Player...well it play for about 60 seconds then it freezes up....into a still frame and its playing from there on with that same still frame until the end of the film........it sucks to be a sucker!!!!

I remember now...there is this progy who can actually cure this kind of problem...its called VCD or DVD Cutter...but it aint free so get ready to waste all your money for it if you really want it soooooooo bad...lol
