@ sarah1973 : Trying to convert a MKV to AVI first, for DVD conversion, is complete rubbish. MKV is much superior to AVI and can hold audio and subtitles streams, that can not be put into AVI at all.
Follow the official way for MKV to DVD conversion, as described on the matroska.org homepage, and also here in this thread.

@ Paul B :

Try to use Mediacoder from http://mediacoder.sf.net , but be aware its not really a one-click and go app. Its extremely powerful, but not easy to use.
Set output to MPEG2, , DVD resolution (720 x 576 PAL or 720 x 480 NTSC).

Sjeffo wrote: I am having the same “problem” but will definately try virtualdubmod. But I have another burning question for Ciottia: You wrote that you don’t have a problem with Mov files burning to a DVD. Can you please tell me how you do that than because I’m trying and surfing the Internet for weeks now but havent found the right software yet. Even better if you have an solution to convert it to an AVI file.

Thanks for the link, Jay. What a great converter! I needed my files in .avi, so they could be viewed in a stand-alone player that won’t recognize .mkv files. Super did the trick!

Wow! Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

I look at all the complicated steps and programs involved and wonder why anyone bothers with mkv at all...

And they want this to be the new universl format?

Sounds like giving up an automobile for a horse and buggy — -you eventually get to the same place, but by the time you get there, you’re sweaty, your hair’s messed up and there’s a whole lot of sh** to clean up on the way.

Thanks everone for all the help and advice, though. It is appreciated.

Ok, umm I’ve been trying to read most of this forum and I have this:

I have some episodes in a .mkv file and looked w/ how to convert MKV to DVD format using the DVD Santa 4.0 and trying to put multiple subtitles in the DVD.

I tried to 'extract' the subtitles using MKVmerge.exe. Although my version is 1.8.0 rather than the 1.5.5 or whatever has been last posted there. If you select the subtitles you want to put and save it on the same file name as the video that you want to put in, but change the end file name from '.mkv' to '.srt'
Does that work as the same as extracting the subtitles for this or no?

This question is also redirected to anyone else who can respond or answer

Oh as well on a added note,

I have an error from the DVD Santa:
“The CinePlayer decoders cannot find a valid license.
Please re-install the product”

Does that as well have anything to do with the problems of loading the subtitles onto the DVD?

I burned a disc with the NTSC video format and it works just fine. Although I can’t or there is no subtitles that I tried to put on there using the DVD Santa method...

Hi,

two more programs have been recommended to us, which seem to be pretty excellent for MKV to DVD conversions :

AVI2DVD

ConvertXToDVD

Guide for ConvertXToDVD
