rmvb - avi/dvd

hi i am totally new to this. so far i have managed to convert the program from rmvb to avi, however when i test the item, i find that there is no sound at all. i used a converter called “video conversion expert” and im currently attempting it in avs video converter. the video end quality is perfect but the sound is not. i was wondering if this was codec based or converter based. if codec based would i need the div x codecs or some other sorts, and if converter based can someone recommend me to a new converter?

EDIT: hmmm the avs converter sound worked fine lol but the video kept spiking rather then playing the music would go but the picture quality would not run smoothly
