I’d like to compress some videos down even further but lately VirtualDub has been giving me the thumbs down to that on some of the videos I’ve downloaded.

Here’s a look at 3 files with Virtualdub and the program AVICodec.

File 1
Virtualdub file/file information/Audio stream/Compression “unknown (tag 0055)"
AVICodec sees 96 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 chan., 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, Supported

Vdub won’t convert it, won’t play it

File 2
VDub: Audio stream compression “Mpeg layer-3 codec”
AVICodec: 131 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 chan., 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, Supported

This one I can work with.

File 3
Vdub: Audio stream compression “unknown (tag 0055)"
AVICodec sees 128 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 chan., 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, Supported

Vdub won’t convert it, won’t play it

Blame the bittorrent coders I suppose. Too bad they dont have a contact address to find out what they did to File 1 and 3 to make it unworkable with virtualdub. the files still play with WMP.

well its funny you should say this as i have the same error , however i encoded this video file my self (a tv recording for personal use ) using power vcr to capture to mpeg2
then dr divX to convert to avi

then when editing in virtual dub its fine untill i have to save it .. then the audio goes askew however it does stream copy the audio ok

im guessing its due to the video bitrate being made up from multiple files and so there are some sudden jump in the bitarates of joining frames .

or where one frame hase been removed but left its audio behind..

its a real pain in the ass

i still am seraching trying to cram muy system full of codecs in the hope that somthing can ply it

Good News Guest

i have identified the 0055 tag its Radium Fraunhofer MP3

the problem is proabably because yuou have the lame mp3 codec installed u need to go in to device manager in to audio codecs and specify in the propertied of lame do not use this codec , then install the radium Fraunhaffoer MP3 pro codec and specify in audio codecs to use this one instead , then virualbub can identify the coerrected information

Remove all those unneeded codecs/codec packs.
Remove every mp3 codec.

Install the right codecs, and only the right ones.

You should get the radlight filter manager and gspot codec information appliance to see
everything you have installed:
http://www.radlight.org/
http://gspot.headbands.com/

If you use windows media player, really the most stable solution for divx ;-) playback is ffdshow, the old stable build:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=53761&package_id=48261&release_id=95213

If you want a better solution, just install a media player that
decodes all those newer formats easily:
http://www.videolan.org/

Further, maybe installing virtualdub 1.5.2 might fix it, nee:
http://64.233.187.104/search?q=cache:LsBgmYExcfcJ:www.labdv.com/forum/viewtopic.php%3Ftopic%3D3561%26forum%3D0+virtualdub+%22tag+0055%22&hl=en

"* Incomplete audio format headers that are rejected by
ACM MP3 codecs are automatically fixed with the
required fields (the infamous "tag 0055" problem). "

For me, I can play files that give me tag 0055 errors in media player, so the problem must be in the VFW decoder, not the directshow decoder.

The problem is that avi file have a bad audio header in the mp3 compression, the suspicius is the unix based codec.
for solve this problem i suggest to recompress the audio with the Avidemux v2.1.2, this software is the vs of the virtualdub, but virtualdub can´t recompress it the audio.
now, compress only the audio in the format “FFm AC3”, the video tag live in “Copy” mode (use ac3, i try with this codec exitly) (the Lpcm, and pcm, and toolame, and lame don´t work).
Now, goto the file menú and choose save->save video, and write a name for this file asd.avi for example. wait a few minuts and you can now subtitle it with virtualdub, convert into a mpg2 for dvd..etc.
the url for the avidemux is URL http://download.berlios.de/avidemux/Avidemux_2.1.2_win32_installer.exe

Cualquier consulta mandarme un correo a asrhael@gmail.com, disculpen mi empobrecido ingles :P
scuse my poor english :P

Save the audio stream (without processing) to a new file (with the Save WAV button).
Rename it to use .mp3 as file extension.

You can play the file in WinAmp now. WinAmp also has a disk writer plug-in.
Play the file using the disk writer plug-in. It will be written to an uncompressed WAV.

Now you can use the new uncompressed WAV file and do whatever you like in VirtualDub.

I was able to fix this problem by using the latest experimental version of virtualdub (1.7.x). It is able to process the audio fine where 1.6.x is not.

Just tried suggestions by alkoholika and 241comp and both work!! BTW, VirtualDub said it correct a “non-zero wBitsPerSample... for better compatability......"

Thanks guys

For solving the problem, only using virtualdub, here’s the solution:

1)Open VirtualDub (do not open the video file)
2)Go to the “Hex Editor” under the “Tools” menu.
3)Under the “Edit” menu, make sure the option “Enable AVI field assist” is checked.
4)Go to “open” under the “file” menu and browse for your video .
5)Search (in aprox the 18º line -may vary from file to file-) for “strf”.
6)By clicking on that line (or the next one) hex values you will be able to see a reference in the hint, at the bottom of the editor called “wBitsPerSample: bits/sample, for PCM only”. This is composed by 2 two digits values (for ex “10 00”wink.
7)Change the values to “00 00”.
8)Save and exit the Hex.
9)be sure to thanks “squid 80”, from the VirtualDub Unofficial Support Forum (he is Gods son in law)

Aranel and Squid, Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! This error was driving me nuts; only a few of my divx encoded avi files were suffering from it. Did the Hex edit as directed as it worked great! Never would have know how to do this — and it’s so simple. Much appreciated.

Hhhmmm looked great but when I checked the lines under strf (Hex editor Virtualdub 1.7.6) I could not find any reference to “wBitsPerSample: bits/sample, for PCM only” Any other ideas?

... there’s probably a second 'strf' string further down in the file. Try searching for the string 'strf'.
