You should check the software that came with your webcam. Nowadays most digital cameras come bundled with some managing and editing software (usually basic, not necessarily sophisticated).
If you want to go the free route it’s a lot more work. You’d have to use RAD Video Tools for conversion to avi (in rare cases RAD can’t convert audio), then use virtualdub to merge. The end result is an avi. The other way is to use tmpgenc with the quicktime plugin, then your output will be an mpeg.
